Brand Strategist, Creative Director & Designer · Chicago

One person, start to finish. The strategy and the kerning come from the same hand, which is why the last decision still agrees with the first one.

I spent the first part of my career in marketing and business development before I ever designed anything. It's why I start with the argument, not the artwork.

I work across strategy, identity, print, and digital — usually all four on the same project, because they're the same problem at different scales. Something beautiful that isn't strategically grounded won't hold. Strategy without craft won't move anyone. Most of what goes wrong in between is a handoff: the person who found the idea isn't the person who executes it, and a little of the original argument leaks out at every seam.

My clients don't share an industry. They share a problem: the work is better than the materials say it is. A law firm with a national résumé and a boutique footprint. A builder whose brand argued against half his own portfolio. A theater company with no theater. The sector changes; the diagnosis rarely does.

A lot of that work happens to be for people who design physical space — architects, interior designers, builders, developers. It wasn't a plan, but it makes sense. They already believe design decisions have consequences, so we skip the part where I have to argue for that and get straight to the harder question of what their own work actually says about them.

Which is why I start with questions before layouts. Who are you actually talking to, what do they need to understand first, and what would have to be true for them to believe you.

By working with only a handful of clients at a time, I can be fully invested in each client's success. The strongest identities get built slowly, carefully, and by someone who cares as much about the outcome as you do.

When I'm not working I'm outside — in the garden with Ernie, our yellow lab, or on the court for a competitive game of tennis or pickleball. The garden turns up in the work more often than you'd think; one annual report is built entirely on a root system. I come by the competitive streak honestly, and it shows up in the work too.

If you're curious what I've built, the portfolio is here. If you're ready to talk, I'd like to hear what you're working on.
